Six Session of the Online Internship Program, “The Contemporary Non-Traditional Security Challenges” organized by Center for Global & Strategic Studies (CGSS), Islamabad


On 9th February 2021 the six Session of the Online Internship Program, “The Contemporary Non-Traditional Security Challenges” organized by Center for Global & Strategic Studies (CGSS), Islamabad was held.
The internship aims to provide an opportunity for students to understand the contemporary global non-traditional challenges, gauge the existing potential, build resilience and find the solutions to mitigate the daunting impacts of these transnational issues.
The theme for the six session was, Cyber Security: Technological Competition and National Security and the speaker for this session was Mr. Tariq Malik, Former Chief Technology Officer, GHQ.
During the session, Mr. Tariq covered fundamental aspects of cyber security and national security from the technological perspective. He stated that in 21st century, almost every conflict is technology-based. He also explained the cybercrime as a big business and the criminals are making a lot of money through cybercrimes and malwares. The developers are creating such tools and sell or rent them to the customers through online black market. Furthermore, he discussed about the dark web that has become a big industry now. He also stated that black money is created through the cyber heinous crimes.
He also stated that Cryptojacking dominates the web attacks. In present times, an upsurge is observed in Cryptojacking malware, which was almost non-existent in 2017. Mr. Tariq also comprehensively described the aspects of national security.
The session was moderated by Ms. Maryam Raza, Research Associate, CGSS.
It is noteworthy that students from all across Pakistan are enrolled in this Online Internship Program. This program will prove to be a milestone for the students of International Relations & related fields to understand the contemporary dynamics of Non-Traditional Security Threats.
